Lizzie Buchanan is a senior at the University at Albany, State University of New York. She’s double majoring in Communications and Emergency Preparedness, homeland security and Cyber Security. While she’s in Israel she will be completing an emergency preparedness centered internship and taking homeland security centered classes. She hopes to gain more knowledge on how countries other than the US mitigate and respond to threats of a homeland. She can’t wait to learn about the culture and history of Israel during her 5 months abroad!

Being asked to do a speech at the End of Ulpan ceremony was hugely flattering, and utterly terrifying. Saying goodbye to the status quo and the people with whom you’ve surrounded yourself can be hard to deal with but knowing that there’s more to come drives life. The end of Ulpan marked an introduction to a new chapter of my time in Israel and the Middle East.
