Winter, Work, and Field Trips

Well, it has finally gotten cold. All the Israelis are bundled up in big coats and scarves and, honestly, so are the international students. After being here for two and half months we got used to the heat! The campus is in full swing now with the Israeli students back for the start of the BGU academic year. There has been a lot of activity on campus with back-to-class parties, markets, and tons of student clubs to join – Model UN is especially popular.

The OSP classes have been going on more fieldtrips recently, and mine have been fascinating. It was particularly interesting for me that on one of my fieldtrips this past week we happened to drive by where some of the major fires had been and saw the damage firsthand. One of our stops was close enough that there was ash in the air. However, we were never in any danger.

Almost all of my classes actually have field trips as a component of the course. Through these field trips I have had the opportunity to visit both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and explore Beer-Sheva in more depth. My last field trip was to south Tel Aviv where we visited an NGO that works with migrant workers and asylum seekers.

But now it’s time to get down to the academics, with midterms over and finals looming on the horizon, there’s not much time left to relax and take it all in.
